Treasures history

Through the hard work and loving dedication of many local citizens the museum was envisioned
and brought to life.  This is a brief history of our efforts and activities.

1995

The Museum of Madison County Board organizes

It begins when Madison is offered a collection of American naval officer uniforms in mint condition.
Without the appropriate place for repository and display, the uniforms are donated to the Quitman
Culture Center.

The Treasures of Madison County, Inc. is born.

Work to establish a museum begins. The purpose is focused on preserving and celebrating the history
of Madison County.

Judge Charles McClure loans W.T. Opera House for meetings.

Party in the Park and an annual Tour of Homes are fundraisers to help increase awareness.

1996

First annual membership meeting held at the home of Billy and Dianne Sullivan.


Photographic Archive Day with the Florida State Archives for the collection of Madison County
historic photographs.

Historical Society votes to share Old Jail with the Treasures of Madison County, Inc.

Holiday Tour of Homes

1997

County approved and funded by the Department of Transportation, the Old Jail renovation begins.

Old Jail renovation is completed

The Treasures of Madison County Museum becomes a reality with a facility to house artifacts

The Treasures of Madison County acquires W.T. Davis Opera House building from Judge

Plans for the Davis-McClure Art Center begin

Application approved and funded for Historic Preservation Grant I.

Renovation of W.T. Davis Building Phase I
